Interview + Giveaway: Terra by Gretchen Powell

On Tour with Prism Book Tours...

gretchen-001Hello there! My name is Gretchen Powell. I
am 24 years old, half-Chinese, and the owner of two adorable miniature schnauzers. I am an occasional drinker of classy wines, and I wrote a book.

By day, I work for a government contractor in our
nation’s capital.
By night, I binge on episodes of Doctor Who and
sleep fitfully.
Sometime in the mid-afternoon, I write another blog called Honey, I Shrunk the Gretchen! about weight loss, food, fitness, and my life.

Some of my favorite things include polka dots,
Harry Potter, pretty much any TV show that airs on Thursday nights (yep, I'm talking Vampire Diaries #notashamed), and playing the ukulele.

About The Book:

Terra (Terrestrials, #1)Terra
by Gretchen Powell
Paperback, 286 pages
Published December 12th 2012 by Hopewell Media
Premise:
A broken and desolate Earth. A young girl struggling to survive. A lost boy with a
powerful secret.

A discovery that will change everything.

In the distant wake of a plague that has decimated the Earth's population, humanity is split in two: The rich and powerful live in skycities that float overhead, while those who remain on the ground have gathered in settlements strewn across a dying planet. Eighteen-year-old Terra Rhodon is a terrestrial--a denizen of the barren groundworld--who makes her living as a scav. Long abandoned by her father, her caregivers gone, Terra supports herself and her younger brother, Mica, by scouring the earth for discarded scraps and metals to recycle for profit. One day, while on a routine scavenging run, she discovers something that shocks her home settlement of Genesis X-16. When the value of her discovery is revealed, Terra's world is turned upside down.

Terra suddenly finds herself asking questions no one will answer. Her search for the truth leads her to Adam--a beguiling skydweller unlike any she has ever met. But Adam has secrets and a quest of his own, and with him by her side, the world Terra thought she knew begins to unravel. Soon her discoveries unearth a terrifying conspiracy that has the potential to shatter everything--a revelation that will test the bonds of loyalty, family, and love.

Interview with Gretchen Powell

Questions about the world building:

Are other Genesis settlements set up like X-16?

The settlements in general follow a similar setup. They’re all placed within a travelable radius from a Skyline Transfer station, they all have Recycling Centers and guardsmen stations, and all the general Tribunal institutions. And most of them don’t have the luxury of an intact UV filter anymore, even though they once did (long, long, LONG ago, haha.)

What are some of the differences between the continents, like say Exodus and Genesis,
and their settlements on Terra's Earth?

I guess you can kind of think of them kind of like the reorganized continents of today. When the world fell apart and the Tribunal took over, things changed. So there’s Genesis, which is essentially what’s left of North America, Exodus, which is former Asia, Deuter, Europe, etc. The population is much decreased and far more spread out, but there are different continents with settlements strewn across them, all filled with terrestrials just trying to get by.

Are they like ours or has so much time/events past that the continents have drifted?

Yes, they are a bit different. It’s not so much that the continents themselves have drifted, or the tectonic plates have shifted, but rather that other things have happened that have changed the literal shape of the world. Water levels rising and dropping, the earth drying up, global warming, all that stuff.

Visiting the skycity was both amazing and terrifying in Terra, will we get to go
back up to another skycity? (I'd love to go as a tourist instead of a political prisoneer
personally..)

I’m not so sure it’ll be in a tourist capacity, exactly, but there is definitely another skycity trip in Terra’s future.

Since our readers are answering this question today, it's only fair to get your answer as well with a slight change. Where would you like to go most besides Genesis X-16 in
this wonderful world you've created?

Personally, I think it’d be the most fun to spend some time on Lexicon – the skycity most well-known for its fabulous casinos and nightlife. Think floating Vegas. I think I could really do some damage in a place like that, don’t you?

Personal/Original Questions:

As a reader, what are a few of your favorites? (Difficult question I know and I'm going to
make it harder: you can't say Terra since that's a given! ;P )

Haha! Well, since my own book is off the table, hehe, I’d say hands-down my all-time favorite books come from the Harry Potter series. I can’t help it, I’m a Potterhead, now and forevermore! Some of my other favorite books are Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson, Memoirs of a Geisha, The Princess Bride, and The Hunger Games (no surprise there, I’m sure.)

Besides our fiery heroine Terra, who are your top 3 (or 5 if you rather) favorite heroines in
Young Adult?

Katniss, of course, though she’s even less emotionally available than Terra, which is sometimes a little hard for me to relate to. I also really love Grace from the Linger Series, and I’ve been reading the Iron Fey series by Julie Kagawa lately, and am liking the heroine Meghan Chase more with each book (she wasn’t my favorite in the first, but she is seriously growing on me.)

Last year you had an awesome Harry Potter birthday bash, what's your b-day plans this
year in meatspace (since we all know what fabulousness is going online)?

I actually just had a Hunger Games-themed birthday party this past weekend! It was epic. I blogged about it on my personal blog if you would like to see just how insane I am when it comes to themed birthday celebrations, hehe. The link is: http://

www.honeyishrunkthegretchen.com/2013/04/15/the-25th-annual-hunger-games/

Do you like the movieHoney, I Shrunk The Kids! or was it just a clever word play that
lead you to picking Honey, I Shrunk the Grechen! for you blog? (I'm just two years
younger than you and grew up loving that movie. I actually cried over an ant because of
it.)

It was actually my sister’s suggestion, and I thought it was really fitting and cute (having also grown up loving the movie… and its sequels! That movie gave me a serious soft spot for ants… and an even deeper hatred of roaches, hehe). It’s ended up sticking, even though sometimes it’s a mouthful to say aloud!

I saw that you're a brony too (*brohoof*), who's your favorite pony and which pony would
you pick for your characters? Or which ones do you think Terra, Mica and Adam would pick
if MLP:FIM existed in Genesis X-16?

Ohhhh man. THE question, huh? Well, I have to say, my favorite pony is none other than the epic, the awesome, the majestic Rainbow Dash. She is just too many levels of amazing (even if she’s a little hardheaded sometimes). If I had to pick pony-counterparts for my main characters, I’d say that Terra and Applejack have the most in common: They’re both hardworking, fiercely protective of family, and pretty much heads of their households. Mica is obviously Spike the Dragon (or maybe Scootaloo
if I had to pick an actual pony), and Adam? Well, he’s got a bit of Rainbow Dash in him too—a little reckless, a little bit of a showoff, but always there for those he cares about.

Oh man, this answer ended up way too long. I guess there’s no hiding the depths of my bronyhood now!*insert smiley*

Awesome answers! I've learned two things: 1. I am totally a fan girl now and 2. I wish I had the talent to make fan art because I'd love ponified version of Terra characters. Thanks for stopping by Gretchen!

Last Days by Adam Nevill is a Blair Witch style novel in which a documentary film-maker undertakes the investigation of a dangerous cult—with creepy consequences.
When guerrilla documentary maker, Kyle Freeman, is asked to shoot a film on the notorious cult known as the Temple of the Last Days, it appears his prayers have been answered. The cult became a worldwide phenomenon in 1975 when there was a massacre including the death of its infamous leader, Sister Katherine. Kyle’s brief is to explore the paranormal myths surrounding an organization that became a testament to paranoia, murderous rage, and occult rituals.  The shoot’s locations take him to the cult’s first temple in London, an abandoned farm in France, and a derelict copper mine in the Arizonan desert where The Temple of the Last Days met its bloody end. But when he interviews those involved in the case, those who haven’t broken silence in decades, a series of uncanny events plague the shoots. Troubling out-of-body experiences, nocturnal visitations, the sudden demise of their interviewees and the discovery of ghastly artifacts in their room make Kyle question what exactly it is the cult managed to awaken – and what is its interest in him?

Recommend? Yes, for those who love and/or interested in wine, Napa Valley, those who like slower character driven novels, mysteries.
Bonfire of the Vanities meets Sideways—a saga of secrets, family, and a mystery bottle of wine that could change everything foreverIn a gorgeous wine valley in northern California, the economic downturn has put a number of dreams on hold.  But above it all is esteemed critic Clyde Craven-Jones, a man whose ego nearly surpasses his substantial girth. As the novel opens he blind taste-tastes a sampling of Cabernets and to his confounded delight discovers one worthy of his highest score (a 20, on the Craven-Jones-on-wine scale), an accolade he's never before awarded.

But the bottle has no origin—and that's a problem for a renowned critic. An investigation into the mystery Cabernet commences, lead by the critic's wife, Claire, and a couple of underdogs—one a determined throw-back to ancient viticulture, the other a wine-stained, Pygmalion-esque scribbler—who by wit and luck rise on incoming tides of money, notoriety and, yes, love.

The stage is set for this true theatre of the varietals—where the reader joins the local vinous glitterati and subterranean enthusiasts hanging out in a seedy bar called the Glass Act. Soon Clyde Craven-Jones finds himself in a compromised position in a fermentation tank, a prominent family finds its internal squabble a public scandal, and a lowly vintner seeks redemption for a decades-old wrongdoing. This is a witty, delectable, and fast-paced novel that, like a good Cabernet, only grows more enjoyable once opened.

The Art of Change

When gallery owner Nellie, a giving yet neurotic New Yorker, brings together the mismatched cast of characters in the opening of Ryan Whittaker’s debut, a phallic show, little does she know that she is setting the scene for odd and unpredictable relationships, much like Shakespeare in Midsummer Night’s Dream. The frenzied, magical mix-up is an outrageous farce with a deep moral message: there is a RIGHT place for everyone in this world and love and friendship cement us in it. The Art of Change is a funny, smooth reading romance, which deals with bridging differences in gender, education, social milieu, in an insane but pragmatic, modern fairytale, set in New York City. The twists of the plot are written without an ounce of cynicism but simply acknowledging that life is neither here nor there, neither black or white and all can be dealt with in real friendship and love.

In the Arena, you're either a killer or a victim.

If survival meant murdering an innocent person in cold blood every week, could you do it? Are you able to stick the knife into your opponent's heart while they look at you with fear in their eyes? Life in the Arena turns everyone into sinners.

A homeless boy is kidnapped from the streets and finds himself imprisoned in a far more horrifying place: the Arena, a place where teenage boys fight to the death for the pleasure of various lowlifes in a modern gladiator pit.

The Arena is the brainchild of Ryker, an ex-convict addicted to alcohol, gladiatorial-esque combats, and money. When not devising new ways for boys to kill each other, he's ruling his small empire with a ruthless fist, rewarding his guards with sex slaves and punishing those who oppose him with barbaric
executions.

Renamed Dog, the boy from the streets must turn himself into a killing machine if he is to continue surviving, but as he leaves a trail of bodies in his wake, the ghosts of slain boys haunts him
and the violence threatens to wake a beast inside him.

Allegra, a slave girl in the Arena and a victim of Ryker's constant abuse, is his only key to salvation. She has lost everything already -- her family, her innocence, and her dignity -- while her will to live hangs on by a thin thread. Can she save Dog's humanity before she too succumbs to the horrors of the Arena?

Seeking to defy Ryker as Dog rises to power as his champion, the stage is set for something to give in this murderous world of young gladiators.

A tale about survival, tragedy, and human perseverance, the complete Shadow of Wrath is the first book in the Sins of the 7 series.

Fans of edgy and controversial dystopian books will love Shadow of Wrath.

The Thing About Weres by Leigh Evans

Brooke Banks | 10:00 PM | | Please comment!

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Breaking the Spine. This meme is for upcoming releases that bloggers are dying to read.

My pick this week:

The Thing About Weres (Mystwalker #2)

Mass Market Paperback, 464 pages
Expected publication: July 30th 2013 by St. Martin's Paperbacks
My review of the first book, Trouble with Fate

THE HEART IS A LONELY HUNTER

In the never-ending saga that is my love-hate relationship with Robson Trowbridge, I, half-Were Hedi Peacock, have had a change of heart. Ever since I shoved Trowbridge through the Gates of Merenwyn, I’ve been the leader of the pack—hard to believe, right? The thing is: I’m half-Fae. So even though my Were side is ready to heed the call of the wild, the other part of me is desperate to take flight. And much as it pains me to admit it, life without Trowbridge is really starting to were me down…

I AM WERE, HEAR ME ROAR.

To make matters worse, the wolves of Creemore want my blood—and the North American Council of Weres wants me dead. So I’m just counting the days until Trowbridge returns from the other realm…and comes to my brave rescue…and becomes my alpha mate. Wishful thinking? Of course it is. But given all the mess I’ve been through already, what’s the harm in doing a little bit of daisy-plucking? Besides, Trowbridge owes me bigtime. A girl can dream.

The next page in the file was a codicil. Emily smiled, remembering how she had once asked her father what a "codicil" was - she had loved the round sound of the word.
