A broken and desolate Earth. A young girl struggling to survive. A lost boy with a
A discovery that will change everything.
In the distant wake of a plague that has decimated the Earth's population, humanity is split in two: The rich and powerful live in skycities that float overhead, while those who remain on the ground have gathered in settlements strewn across a dying planet. Eighteen-year-old Terra Rhodon is a terrestrial--a denizen of the barren groundworld--who makes her living as a scav. Long abandoned by her father, her caregivers gone, Terra supports herself and her younger brother, Mica, by scouring the earth for discarded scraps and metals to recycle for profit. One day, while on a routine scavenging run, she discovers something that shocks her home settlement of Genesis X-16. When the value of her discovery is revealed, Terra's world is turned upside down.
Terra suddenly finds herself asking questions no one will answer. Her search for the truth leads her to Adam--a beguiling skydweller unlike any she has ever met. But Adam has secrets and a quest of his own, and with him by her side, the world Terra thought she knew begins to unravel. Soon her discoveries unearth a terrifying conspiracy that has the potential to shatter everything--a revelation that will test the bonds of loyalty, family, and love.
Are other Genesis settlements set up like X-16?
The settlements in general follow a similar setup. They’re all placed within a travelable radius from a Skyline Transfer station, they all have Recycling Centers and guardsmen stations, and all the general Tribunal institutions. And most of them don’t have the luxury of an intact UV filter anymore, even though they once did (long, long, LONG ago, haha.)
What are some of the differences between the continents, like say Exodus and Genesis,
and their settlements on Terra's Earth?
I guess you can kind of think of them kind of like the reorganized continents of today. When the world fell apart and the Tribunal took over, things changed. So there’s Genesis, which is essentially what’s left of North America, Exodus, which is former Asia, Deuter, Europe, etc. The population is much decreased and far more spread out, but there are different continents with settlements strewn across them, all filled with terrestrials just trying to get by.
Are they like ours or has so much time/events past that the continents have drifted?
Yes, they are a bit different. It’s not so much that the continents themselves have drifted, or the tectonic plates have shifted, but rather that other things have happened that have changed the literal shape of the world. Water levels rising and dropping, the earth drying up, global warming, all that stuff.
Visiting the skycity was both amazing and terrifying in Terra, will we get to go
back up to another skycity? (I'd love to go as a tourist instead of a political prisoneer
I’m not so sure it’ll be in a tourist capacity, exactly, but there is definitely another skycity trip in Terra’s future.
Since our readers are answering this question today, it's only fair to get your answer as well with a slight change. Where would you like to go most besides Genesis X-16 in
this wonderful world you've created?
Personally, I think it’d be the most fun to spend some time on Lexicon – the skycity most well-known for its fabulous casinos and nightlife. Think floating Vegas. I think I could really do some damage in a place like that, don’t you?
As a reader, what are a few of your favorites? (Difficult question I know and I'm going to
make it harder: you can't say Terra since that's a given! ;P )
Haha! Well, since my own book is off the table, hehe, I’d say hands-down my all-time favorite books come from the Harry Potter series. I can’t help it, I’m a Potterhead, now and forevermore! Some of my other favorite books are Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson, Memoirs of a Geisha, The Princess Bride, and The Hunger Games (no surprise there, I’m sure.)
Besides our fiery heroine Terra, who are your top 3 (or 5 if you rather) favorite heroines in
Katniss, of course, though she’s even less emotionally available than Terra, which is sometimes a little hard for me to relate to. I also really love Grace from the Linger Series, and I’ve been reading the Iron Fey series by Julie Kagawa lately, and am liking the heroine Meghan Chase more with each book (she wasn’t my favorite in the first, but she is seriously growing on me.)
Last year you had an awesome Harry Potter birthday bash, what's your b-day plans this
year in meatspace (since we all know what fabulousness is going online)?
I actually just had a Hunger Games-themed birthday party this past weekend! It was epic. I blogged about it on my personal blog if you would like to see just how insane I am when it comes to themed birthday celebrations, hehe. The link is: http://
Do you like the movieHoney, I Shrunk The Kids! or was it just a clever word play that
lead you to picking Honey, I Shrunk the Grechen! for you blog? (I'm just two years
younger than you and grew up loving that movie. I actually cried over an ant because of
It was actually my sister’s suggestion, and I thought it was really fitting and cute (having also grown up loving the movie… and its sequels! That movie gave me a serious soft spot for ants… and an even deeper hatred of roaches, hehe). It’s ended up sticking, even though sometimes it’s a mouthful to say aloud!
I saw that you're a brony too (*brohoof*), who's your favorite pony and which pony would
you pick for your characters? Or which ones do you think Terra, Mica and Adam would pick
if MLP:FIM existed in Genesis X-16?
Ohhhh man. THE question, huh? Well, I have to say, my favorite pony is none other than the epic, the awesome, the majestic Rainbow Dash. She is just too many levels of amazing (even if she’s a little hardheaded sometimes). If I had to pick pony-counterparts for my main characters, I’d say that Terra and Applejack have the most in common: They’re both hardworking, fiercely protective of family, and pretty much heads of their households. Mica is obviously Spike the Dragon (or maybe Scootaloo
if I had to pick an actual pony), and Adam? Well, he’s got a bit of Rainbow Dash in him too—a little reckless, a little bit of a showoff, but always there for those he cares about.
Oh man, this answer ended up way too long. I guess there’s no hiding the depths of my bronyhood now!*insert smiley*
Awesome answers! I've learned two things: 1. I am totally a fan girl now and 2. I wish I had the talent to make fan art because I'd love ponified version of Terra characters. Thanks for stopping by Gretchen!
